Flag Key Articles for Your Newsletter Recipients

Unlike personal e-mails or letters, newsletters contain articles, stories or tips for an audience that, while targeted, may also be diverse. But you can still let individual recipients know you are thinking of them by “flagging” key articles.

A powerful practice-development tool, the flag does exactly what its name suggests. You target members of your audience who are likely to be interested in a particular topic, and then draw their attention to a newsletter article on that topic.

This doesn’t require a lot of time. Your personal experiences with many of your newsletter recipients should tell you which articles would interest which people. The flag can be a memo on your office stationery, or it could be as simple as a small sticky note. Keep it short—in a sentence or two mention that an article might interest them or that it relates to a conversation you recently had.

The flag may be short and sweet, but that sentence or two can be powerful. It lets your reader know that you are thinking about him or her and that you are aware of their interests.
